How To Kill A Person

Saturday, March 17, 2012

(Not literally, of course.)

You start by smothering a flame.
The one that makes you keep the faith
and wake up each day
believing
it'll be better than yesterday
because today, you're Alive.
Not just  any alive,
but Alive.

Envelop that flame
with rules, pressure, distractions, expectations and the 'right'-ations
but do it gradually
with the polished air of detachment.

Because that's exactly what happens.

Let them catch hold of the oxygen
with their grubby hands and greedy ways.
Leave the barest minimum to nourish the flame;
keep the embers precariously between
asphyxiation and extinction.

You start by smothering a flame
with the best of intentions.

We spoke about how university changes a person, how we all - brighteyed & bushytailed - had grand plans for our duration of study, how we've veered so far off course, how we're swept up in the academic hurricane and how the fog has blurred our priorities. Perhaps not having plans might just be the best plan?
